Accommodation and adaptation

Living in such close quarters, with so little privacy and limited ability to do exactly what one wants to do means that people must adapt some and accommodate each other some. For Calvin, I requested an extra sheet at the Motel 6 this evening. We spread it on the floor so he can lie on the floor and be inside his own head, something he does often at home in a quiet corner. For the last three nights, Eleanor has covered herself in bed sheets and read with a book light while Calvin slept on top of the sheets. Last night we piled blankets and things at the end of the kids’ bed so Matt could watch a nearly silent Monday football game without the kids being able to see the screen (and be distracted). I’m sitting now in a Motel 6 bathroom on a plastic chair, having just finished working on a grant proposal while my family sleeps.

This is all kind of funny when written out, but to be honest it’s trying for all of us. With six weeks to work it out, I expect we’ll be good at it by the end. Or we could be crazed, but I’m hoping for the better outcome. ☺

I think you should mention your writing circumstances in your proposal.

"Do you people realize that I'm WRITING THIS IN A MOTEL 6 BATHROOM?? HOW IN THE &$*#@% AM I SUPPOSED TO COMPETE WITH PEOPLE AT HARVARD?!" (to be read like Chris Farley in his "van down by the river" voice)
