Devastation

I know it's several days after the fact, but if this blog is going to really document the highs and lows of our homeschooling year, I have to say something about it. You know what "it" is. We went to Ann Arbor for our annual family (minus Jen) outing to a Michigan game. Yay! Then Michigan treated us to the biggest upset in college football history. Boo! The weather was perfect. Yay! The season is over before it began. Boo! We had good food while we were there. Yay! We had to go home to face the music from pretty much everyone we know. Boo!

I still can't believe it. Although after seeing Appalachian State in action, I say they would finish no less than fifth in the Big Ten this year. Nevertheless, having kids really puts it into perspective. I was holding Calvin as the last seconds wound down because he couldn't see when we were all standing for the last field goal attempt (which would be the SECOND blocked attempt of the day, for those of you scoring at home!). As the kick was blocked and time expired, we all just stood in stunned silence. All I could do was stare at the scoreboard and think about all of the hopes we and everyone else had for this season. Then this: "Dad, look at the way that paper is floating down to the ground. It's almost like it's flying." Snapped back to reality. Who cares about what we witnessed, or what it meant. The paper high above the stadium looked like it was flying as it fell.

As we left the stadium, Calvin said "I've never seen so many Michigan fans looking down at the ground with their heads down at a game before." I raised my head a little and said, "Yep."
